For the first time since the early 1990s, WPRI-TV, Channel 12's, late-night newscast at 11 p.m. is number one in the market, narrowly beating rival WJAR-TV, Channel 10. At 6 p.m., traditionally considered a station's flagship newscast, Channel 10 still leads Channel 12, and in the early morning Channel 10 remains dominant. WLNE-TV, Channel 6, lags far behind.

The numbers are from the Nielsen overnight ratings for the week of Oct. 19-23. At 11 p.m., Channel 12 has a 6.8 rating and a 13.9 share, compared to a 6.5 rating and a 13.2 percent share for Channel 10 and a 1.9 rating and a 3.9 share for Channel 6.

The rating is the percentage of the 623,000 households with televisions in the Providence/New Bedford market. Each rating point represents 6,230 households. The share is the percentage of televisions that are on.

At 6 p.m., Channel 10 leads with a 8.4 rating and a 17.1 share, followed by Channel 12 with a 6.5 rating and a 13.3 share, and Channel 6 with a 1.7 rating and a 3.4 share. In the early morning, from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m., Channel 10 has a 6 rating, 26 share, followed by Channel 12 with a 2.1 rating and a 9 share, and Channel 6 with a .9 rating, 3.8 share.

Channel 10 is a staple in RI news or otherwise. Channel 12 also. But 10 has always lead the pack. But it's been getting closer and closer. Channel 10 has slid back ever since the recent house-cleaning of some of the highest paid on-air personalities and just because some of the remaining crew were second-stringers and while ambitious wereand are getting stale. Bringing back Gary Ley on weekends is not the answer; although his professionalism and personality are welcome sights. Channel 10 has got to get a new image rather than asking the viewing public to accept less in terms of quality and expecting to remain first in ratings.
New faces and top professional personalities commensurate with the NBC flag ship. Gene, Patrice and the others are not Doug(RIP) or the others who leapfrogged all the competition over the past several decades.
The ratings drop I suspect is correlated to the big dollar guys who were let go. A whole new crew needs to be brought in so that Channel 10 can regain its number one role it always could be proud of. There is clearly a marked differnce in the quality of the news shows now.Frank Coletta while still enjoying top ratings for the morning show, better keep up with the times in terms of style and the new viewers coming into the news-viewing market.
Channel 12: keep going; you folks are doing well and could be the pace-setters for the next decade. Best wishes to you all.

It's hard to imagine people relying on the local TV stations for their news. The internet is up to date, more accurate and easily obtainable. The local TV stations are opinionated, narrow-minded and have a very insulting presentation to the audience. If one has to watch TV then I would suspect CNN be the better choice. Locally, read the paper.
