By CYNTHIA NEEDHAM Though a selection committee has been mum on the identity of its pick for the new director of the state's Economic Development Corporation, Governor Carcieri this week confirmed the name one of two finalists: Ioanna T. Morfessis. Morfessis now works as the president of an economic development consulting firm in Phoeniz, Ariz. According to the Arizona Republic newspaper, she was the founding president/CEO of the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council. "She's one of the two," Carcieri confirmed when asked about Morfessis' selection on Thursday. "I interviewed both of them. We haven't finalized it because there are a lot of issues around contracts. She's very good, but there are still two." Carcieri did not name the other finalist. A day earlier, selection committee chairman Alfred J. Verrecchia said the group had already chosen between the two finalists. But he declined to release the name of the pick until compensation issues could be worked out. Those negotiations could hinge on the passage of a bill before the General Assembly authorizing the state to offer the director a three-year contract, as a guarantee that their job won't disappear when Carcieri finishes his term in early 2011. "This could easily go down the tubes if we can't deal with the compensation piece of it, and by that I mean getting a three-year contract that will give that person a sense of security," Verrecchia said on Wednesday.
