PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Brown University and its food service workers reached a tentative contract settlement early today, shortly after the union's contract expired at midnight. Mark Nickel, Brown's director of university communications, said that negotiators reached the agreement with Local 615 of the Service Employees International Union at about 2 a.m. He said his understanding was that the union membership will now hold a ratification vote on the offer. The union represents about 180 cooks, bakers, servers and others who operate Brown's several dining halls. Nickel said the workers include "pretty much everything in the food service area." He said the terms of the agreement wouldn't be made public immediately. The settlement came after a federal mediation joined the negotiations. |
