The U.S. jobless rate in August rose to 9.7 percent, the highest since 1983, and employers cut 216,000 jobs, the U.S. Labor Dept. reported Friday The 9.7 rate was up from 9.4 percent in July. Rhode Island and the rest of the New England states are scheduled to report jobless rates for August on Sept. 18. For July, Rhode Island's rate was 12.7 percent, the second highest in the country behind Michigan at 15 percent. The New England unemployment rate in July was 8.6 percent, its highest point since November 1976. The rates of the other New England states in July were: New Hampshire, 6.8 percent; Vermont, 6.8 percent; Connecticut, 7.8 percent; and Maine, 8.4 percent. Massachusetts' rate of 8.8 percent was at its highest point since August 1992. Since the start of the national recession in December 2007, all six New England states have recorded increases in their unemployment rates ranging from 6.7 percentage points in Rhode Island to 2.8 percentage points in Vermont. |
