Global business giant Textron Inc. of Providence is in the process of laying off 139 employees of its corporate offices worldwide, including 56 at the company's corporate headquarters in downtown Providence, a Textron spokesman confirmed today.

Textron, which makes Bell helicopters, Cessna aircraft, E-Z-GO golf carts and other items, announced the layoffs internally on Tuesday and Wednesday; they will take effect "over the coming days and weeks," company spokesman Michael Maynard said.

"Like so many other businesses, Textron has felt the effects of the downturn in the U.S. and the global economies," he said. The layoffs are intended to better align the company's corporate operations with Textron's various businesses, he said.

Textron has about 37,000 employees worldwide. In Providence, the company employs about 400, Maynard said. Thus, the local layoffs represent a reduction of about 14 percent in Textron's overall workforce in Providence.

Textron recently reported that its total revenues fell by 29 percent, to about $2.6 billion, for the three months ended July 4. The company in late July estimated that its revenues for 2009 will be about $10.6 billion, down from its previous expectation of about $11 billion because of lower expected jet deliveries.

The layoffs have been going on at Textron for months and months now. Glad to see it's finally getting press. What this article doesn't mention is the fact that many who were laid off were professionals in their fields - folks who held cpas, lawyers, etc. Where the heck are they going to work now? My guess is that it's more people who will be forced to leave the state.

The sad, BUT TRUE, fact is that most of Textron's business losses can be traced to epicly bad business decisions, HUGELY over-paid sychophant executives who bring no value to the company, and general mismanagement of resources. Yes, the downturn in the global economy (especially as it has affected Bell & Cessna) has been a blow to revenues. But the sad fact is, the horrendous lack of management & leadership of this company (i.e. Lewis Campbell, the-asleep-at-the-wheel Board of Directors, the fools running Bell helicopter circa 2003 - 2008 and up to Millman's retirement) has brought it to its knees. What a horrible, avoidable shame.

If there's one constant nowadays, it seems to be obscenely overpaid executives while workers get stiffed.

Now, I am not actually a Socialist, contrary to what the rightwing wingnuts think of Democrats, but this sort of thing does make the free market look like it stinks.
