PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- New data from the Department of Revenue shows that hotel tax revenue statewide in June was down roughly 15 percent with significant decreases in communities that account for 70 percent of the state's total draw. The amount of money collected from room taxes in Rhode Island was down 14.7 percent statewide from June 2008, according to the report. In Providence, revenue was down 11.8 percent. Warwick also showed a significant decrease with 18.4 percent less takings. Middletown came in 32 percent less. In Newport, using data obtained from the city, hotel tax revenue for June was off 27.5 percent. The popular destination spot accounts for 25 percent of the state's total hotel tax revenue draw coming from the 39 communities. |
