Rhode Island will receive $2.6 million to upgrade technology involving the state's unemployment insurance programs, the U.S. Department of Labor said on Monday.

The upgrades will improve the operation and security of unemployment insurance systems, Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis said in a statement. "Making sure that claims and benefits are processed and paid in a timely, consistent and secure manner is critical to providing workers with the income security needed to actively seek re-employment," she said.

The federal agency is expected to advise the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training soon about which of the state agency's grant applications will receive the funds. The U.S. Department of Labor said Monday that, among other things, states generally will use their grants to modernize systems to improve and speed unemployment insurance benefit payments, tax collections and appeals processing, as well as to help consumers avoid debit card fees when collecting benefits. Rhode Island is one of 49 states that will receive grants.
