By Alex Kuffner First the good news: Rhode Island no longer has the second-highest jobless rate in the nation. Now the bad: It only dropped one place to third. Nevada leapfrogged Rhode Island with an unemployment rate of 13.2 percent in August, up from 12.5 percent in July, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Over the same period, Rhode Island's rate edged up only a tenth of a point to 12.8 percent. Both states trail far behind Michigan, hit hard by the automotive industry crisis, which saw its rate step up to 15.2 percent from 15 percent. California and Oregon round out the top five, both with rates of 12.2 percent. California's rate is up three tenths of a point from July and Oregon's increased 4 tenths of a point. |
