Foxwoods Resort Casino and the adjacent MGM Grand in Connecticut this week began charging a one-percent "tribal tax" on top of the six percent state sales tax at shops in the facilities. The new tax was assessed by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which operates both casinos. Connecticut Atty. Gen. Richard Blumenthal said the tax may be a problem if the casinos aren't identifying the extra tax. His office is also looking into whether the tax is legal. Officials at Foxwoods officials said the one-percent tribal tax is not related to the tribe's financial problems. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is seeking to restructure at least $1.45 billion in debt to avoid default. (Staff) |
