LINCOLN, R.I. -- The 62-year history of racing in Lincoln will be interrupted Saturday with the suspension of greyhound racing at the Twin River slot parlor. Racing at the venue off Louisquissett Pike halts Saturday, four months prematurely, the result of wrangling over Twin River's future. The stoppage threatens kennel operators and dog owners, who will lose potential revenue from 75 canceled racing dates, their representatives said. "If we don't run those 75 days and if we don't get any compensation for those days, it would probably put some people out of business," said Tony Tutalo, a kennel owner from Johnston. Tutalo is one of a dozen kennel owners who operate at the Lincoln track, some of whom also own greyhounds raced there. Nine of the 12 kennels are Rhode Island operations and one is from Massachusetts. About 300 people are members of the Rhode Island Greyhound Owners Association, of which about 10 percent are Rhode Islanders. The kennel operators and dog owners are under pressure from the financiers who now control Twin River to give up annual payments they get for keeping pari-mutuel betting alive in Lincoln.
