Toys R Us is rolling out its own "cash for clunkers" program -- but it only extends as far as the kind of vehicles parents push on sidewalks.

On Friday, Toys R Us, Inc. begins The "Great Trade-In" event, a national program allowing people to trade-in used strollers, cribs, car seats and other baby products in exchange for savings on a new item.

"In today's economy, we are looking for ways to stretch our dollars, but in doing so, children's safety should not be compromised," said Jerry Storch, chairman and chief executive officer of Toys R Us. "We hope this program will help raise awareness of the importance of being vigilant about potentially unsafe children's items that ,may still be in the marketplace."

All Toys R Us and Babies R Us locations will accept returns of any used cribs, car seats, bassinets, strollers, travel systems, play yards and high chairs in exchange for a 20-percent savings on the purchase of any new baby item, in any of these product categories, from select manufacturers. The program runs through Sunday, Sept. 20,

Program runs through Nov 1, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.
