By Paul Edward Parker PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Governor's Office of Economic Recovery and Reinvestment is seeking ideas for ways Rhode Island can use a share of $4.7 billion in federal stimulus money to improve broadband networks within the state. Amy Kempe, spokeswoman for Governor Carcieri, said the state is looking to brainstorm with technology firms to coordinate grant submissions from Rhode Island to the federal government, but is not necessarily looking to develop projects that would be run by the state. Kempe said the governor's office does not want to limit the types of broadband projects that might be proposed, but said examples could include bringing broadband Internet connections to rural areas that have been hard to reach or poor areas where few residents can afford the connections. Information about the program, which has an Aug. 7 deadlines for submissions to the governor's office, can be found at the Office of Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Web site. |
