The IHOP restaurant chain is offering free meals for children through Sept. 13 at participating locations, joining a number of eateries trying to drum up business amid a nagging recession.

IHOP is offering one free children's meal with the purchase of an adult entree, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily, through mid-September. The offer is good for children 12 years old and younger, and only for meals on its "Just for Kids" menu.

The 1,421-unit chain, based in Glendale, Calif., operates locations in Providence and Middletown, as well as North Dartmouth, Mass. Diners are advised to call ahead to the location they want to visit to ensure that it is participating in the promotion.
