FALL RIVER, Mass -- Southcoast Hospitals Group, which operates hospitals in Fall River and New Bedford, said Thursday that it will lay off 20 to 40 people during the next six months. President and CEO Keith A. Hovan also announced a wage freeze that he said will save another 200 jobs, and said that the hospital group will also reevaluate its health insurance benefits. The company, which operates Charlton Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, and Tobey Hospital in Wareham. It blamed the cutbacks on reduced state and federal reimbursement rates. In the case of union employees at Tobey Hospital, the only one with unions, Southcoast said it will follow the terms of their contracts. |
