By NEIL DOWNING The state Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education plans to issue a draft set of teacher evaluations next week, said Rhode Island's new Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist. The drafts, which will be open for public comment, will represent possible ways to evaluate schoolteachers in Rhode Island, Gist said on Saturday. "We evaluate our students. We hold them accountable." And so, Gist said, the state should also hold accountable its schoolteachers - as well as its administrators and others - including herself. Gist also pledged to improve the state's school system. "I assure you that Rhode Island will be in the forefront of education transformation" in the nation, she said. Gist's comments came at the annual meeting on Saturday of the Rhode Island Statewide Coalition, which, among other things, generally supports lower taxes and smaller government. It was one of her first public presentations since she took over the post, formerly held by Peter McWalters, on July 1. About 280 people attended Saturday's conference, at the Hyatt Regency hotel on Goat Island in Newport, said the group's chairman, Harry L. Staley. CommentsLeave a comment |

I was at the RISC meeting and Deborah Gist frightens me because she said RI was violating the civil rights of children by not properly educating them properly. She sounded more like the ACLU on this matter than an education reformer from Washington DC.
Perhaps she also believes that throwing away approximately $9300 per child for pre-K education in this state is a great idea too. Yup, $9300 per child for education ONLY for families that are so far behind in skills, language (yup, those whose families who do not want to assimilate) and financial standings. I guess this means only Welfare, EBT and current kids on RI Care. Those who work hard to raise their kids need not apply?
Deborah Gist has a lot to prove to me and she can start by petitioning Congress to get rid of the Federal law that says all children will be educated regardless of where they originated.
Illegal aliens and their children simply do not belong here.
Arizona School Department realize a surplus of 48 million dollars the FIRST year when they enacted eVerify. Illegal aliens self deport and guess what? They took their kids with them.
Arizona realized smaller classroom sizes and saved money on stupid alternate language classes.
That's the kind of education reform we also need in Rhode Island.

No, illegals do not belong here. Look at the 3,I believe, American hikers that were hiking close to the Iran border they were arrested. What about the 2 news people that were arrested in China because they went over the border. No questions asked from Iran and China they don't fool around. The USA needs to wake up the illegals are draining our system. They are responsible for most of the crimes in AZ, but the do gooders call it racial profiling when they are arrested which is a hugh pile of BS. Get them out of here.

Three cheers for Deborah Gist! Her plan may not be perfect, but we have to start somewhere!

The devil is in the details, so lets stop the high fives until we actually see what it is. As a course of labor law evaluations are a mandatory subject to bargining issue. So just because there is a new evaluation instrument it will have to be negociated with each of the individual unions.

Teachers are already evaluated in their local districts. Why do we need more bureacracy? This is idiotic and is not the problem.

Hmmmm..So we evaluate students, we evaluate teachers, and I'm sure that we evaluate principals and other administrators. Gee, I feel like something's missing......Oh, I remember! When are we gonna start evaluating the blanking parents? Seeing as they're the problem and all that! Remember, Ms. Gist came to us from the MOST EXPENSIVE and LOWEST PERFORMING school district in the U.S.A., Washington, DC!
