PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The average price of diesel fuel in Rhode Island dropped a hefty 9 cents over the past week, to $2.69 per gallon, according to Monday's weekly survey of four retailers by the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources. The previous week, it had risen 7 cents per gallon to $2.78, the highest price since early December. Meanwhile, the survey found that the typical price of self-service regular gasoline rose by a penny, putting it at $2.69 as well. The average price of home heating oil remained at $2.55, the same as last week, and up 7 cents from two weeks earlier. The changes come after oil prices were mixed last week, until Friday. The price of home heating oil for September delivery bounced around from $1.94 per gallon on Monday, Aug. 10, to $1.88 on Wednesday, before taking a sharp drop Friday to below $1.84 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Monday morning trading briefly brought the price below $1.79. Gasoline futures also dropped sharply Friday and stayed down Monday morning, to below $1.88 per gallon. The price had gone as high as $2.08 on Thursday. Crude oil for September delivery showed a similar pattern, trading at close to $65 per barrel Monday. The price had gone up to more than $71 on Thursday. gemery@projo.com / (401)277-7442 CommentsLeave a comment |
