The University of Rhode Island announced Tuesday it will receive a $13 million grant from the federal government to develop faster, more efficient ways to create vaccines.

The award from the National Institutes of Health was given to Dr. Annie S. De Groot, who joined URI from Brown University six months ago and directs URI's Institute for Immunology and Informatics.

De Groot, in a statement, called the grant "a dream come true" because it will provide "a team of researchers based right here in Rhode Island with the exciting opportunity to collaborate across disciplines and to teach the next generation of scientists to use tools that are accelerating the development of vaccines" and drugs.

All the work "is directed at moving vaccine products towards the clinic," she said.

This is the second major NIH grant URI has received in recent months. In May, it was awarded an $18-million five-year grant for research into cell biology, molecular toxicology and behavioral science.
