Summer hiring at Rhode Island restaurants remains roughly equal to last year, according to figures from the National Restaurant Association.

The association calculates summer employment by taking the average number of restaurant jobs in June, July and August and determining how many more jobs there were than in March. For 2009, the association projects seasonal hiring at Rhode Island restaurants to be 4,800 jobs, bringing total restaurant employment to 41,300. That's just a shade less than the 2008 total, 4,900 summer hires.

Nationally, eating and drinking places are projected to add 381,800 jobs this summer, slightly less that the 402,900 jobs added in the summer of 2008.
