What, Ocean Avenue, land of mansions, didn't make the cut?

Indian Spring, one of many mansions on Ocean Avenue in Newport.

Well, maybe New Yorkers had it right about Rhode Island: Pass through it if you must, but you'll see no reason to stand there.

An innocuous question posed by a passenger to pass the time on an international flight is the inspiration for an Internet poll meant to catalogue the top 100 places to visit around the world, as well as the top 100 places to visit within the United States or in other geographic regions.

Alas, as much as Rhode Island tourism officials like to tout the state's scenery, and particularly Newport as a must-see desination for the world's travelers, thus far it hasn't made a list of the country's scenic or cultural landmarks on www.stoodthere.com

Maybe voters haven't heard of Ocean Avenue or Providence's orange "P", the Big Blue Bug or Ocean Avenue.

While none of Rhode Island's well-known places made the list, only one did from Massachusetts. Weighing in at No. 100 was Plymouth Rock, the site known as where the Pilgrims landed.
