WEST WARWICK, R.I. -- Archway Bus Transportation Inc., has met the criteria to participate in a new 18-month pilot study, being conducted by the University of Vermont, which will set guidelines for motor coach companies seeking a certification for practicing safe emissions using clean fuels and engine technology. The Green Coach Certification Program trials is to determine if a program can be established to support the idea that motor coaches in United States are indeed the most affordable and environmentally friendly mode of mass transportation. A report published earlier this year by the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nonprofit group based in Cambridge, asserts that buses, or motor coach travel is greener, more fuel efficient and contribute less to global warming pollution per passenger. To enter the trial, participants had to demonstrate they were at least meeting or exceeding the industry average of 148 passenger miles per gallon; running an EPA 2007 or 2010 compliant engine; offset carbon emissions by 80 percent through an endorsed carbon-trading program; use alternative fuels such as a blend of Biodiesel; have a verifiable energy conservation and recycling program and use other emerging environmental technologies. After the trial, the university will publish the final standards for the Green Coach Certification. It will identify a new or existing governmental agency to oversee the program and continue to promote the industry's greenhouse gas reduction initiatives. |
