Rhode Islanders who took advantage of free tax preparation services offered by the United Way of Rhode Island and the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program obtained more than $11 million in tax credits and savings this past tax-filing season, the United Way of Rhode Island said on Tuesday. The agency said it teamed up with Citizens Bank, the state Department of Human Services and the IRS, and used grant money from the Wal-Mart Foundation, to enable Rhode Islanders access to the free tax services. Volunteers helped taxpayers obtain a number of tax credits and other items, including the earned income credit, a tax break for the working poor. Anthony Maione, the agency's president and CEO, said in a statement, "We are grateful to all of the volunteers who donated their time to make this program a success especially in today's economy. . . . For some Rhode Islanders, their refunds and tax credits meant keeping a roof over their head or paying utility bills." |
