The U.S. lost fewer jobs than expected in May, signaling that the the country's deep recession may be starting to abate. Still, the jobless rate jumped to 9.4 percent from 8.9 percent in April. The country lost 345,000 jobs, after losing a revised 504,000 jobs in April. Rhode Island's unemployment rate for April, the last month available was 11.1 percent, the fourth highest in the country. The May rate is scheduled to be released on June 19. Read Journal staff writer Benjamin N. Gedan's report later today on projo.com about when Rhode Island's economy is forecast to recover. In April, the jobless rate rose after holding steady in March. |
