The Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday debated legislation aimed at overhauling the state Economic Development Corporation.

The legislation is based on the findings of a study commission that released a critical report in April about the effectiveness of the job-creation agency.

Attorney Marc Crisafulli, a member of the study commission, testified at the hearing, as did commission member Sue Stenhouse, Governor Carcieri's deputy director of community relations. The committee, however, did not vote on whether to forward the bill for a full Senate vote, Senate spokesman Greg Pare said.

The legislation, sponsored by state Sen. William S. Felag Jr., D-Warren, would expand the EDC board from 8 members to 13 and grant a three-year contract to the agency's next executive director.
