The Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday will debate legislation aimed at overhauling the state Economic Development Corporation. The hearing on the bill, sponsored by state Sen. William S. Felang Jr., D-Bristol, Tiverton, Warren, is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Room 211 of the State House. The legislation would expand the EDC board from 8 members to 13. It would also grant a three-year contract to the agency's executive director, helping to "attract applicants who might otherwise avoid an appointment by a lame-duck governor with less than two years remaining in office," The Providence Journal reported Tuesday. The legislation is based on the findings of a study commission that released a critical report in April about the effectiveness of the job-creation agency. |
