Hiring in the Providence-New Bedford area is forecast to be up slightly in the third quarter, while layoffs are expected to be down a small amount, an early sign that the region's recession may be loosening its grip. An employment outlook survey by Manpower, the temporary help agency, showed that from July to September, 14 percent of the companies interviewed plan to hire more workers. That's up from 11 percent in the second quarter. Also, the survey showed 13 percent expect to reduce their payrolls and another 70 percent expect to maintain their current staff levels. The remainder are not certain of their hiring plans. Job prospects appear to be brightest in construction, durable goods manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, professional and business services and leisure and hospitality. Employers in nondurable goods manufacturing, transportation and utilities, education and health services, other services and government plan to reduce staffing levels. Hiring in information and financial activities is expected to remain unchanged. |
