PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The rise in fuel prices is starting to look relentless. The Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources logged another gasoline price hike in Monday's weekly survey: 8 cents more per gallon for regular self-serve, to $2.68 per gallon. For the average driver, whose tank holds about 15 gallons, that means a fillup cost $1.20 more Monday than a week ago. The drain on the budget is been increasingly rapidly since the beginning of May, when prices had been rising, but gradually. Between May 4 and May 11, you paid an extra $2.25 for that 15-gallon purchase, the next week it was $1.05 more, followed by weekly increases of $1.80, $1.35, 75 cents and last week's $1.20 hike. That's $8.40 more to fill up your tank in just the last month and a half. Diesel prices, which have also been going up rapidly since late May, increased 7 cents per gallon, to $2.68, in the last week, 10 cents the week before and 3 cents the week before that. Home heating oil jumped just a penny a gallon in the last week, to $2.46 per gallon, but that was after an 8-cent increase the week before. gemery@projo.com / (401)277-7442 |
