Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch has called for the state's health care commissioner to hold public hearings about proposed increases in medical insurance rates in Rhode Island.

In a statement released Tuesday, Lynch said the public comment opportunity planned by the commissioner, Christopher F. Koller, is "inadequate and without meaning." Koller has set a deadline for Friday for public comment on the proposed rate hikes, Lynch said.

On Monday, Lt. Gov. Elizabeth H. Roberts joined business leaders at an event held to protest the rate increases, Providence Journal writer Richard Salit reported. Blue Cross has proposed raising average premiums 13.9 percent for small employers and 16.3 percent for large employers. UnitedHealthCare is seeking increases of 11.6 percent and 13.2 percent.
