TIVERTON, R.I. -- VeroScience LLC, a privately held biotechnology and healthcare development company in Tiverton, has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of a drug it has developed for treating Type 2 diabetes,, the company announced Wednesday morning. Cycloset is a first-in-class, central acting agent for the disease that would improve glycemic control across a broad patient population, according to a company release. It is the first diabetes-therapy drug to be approved following the FDA's new guidelines that require manufacturers to provide evidence that these drugs do not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. VeroScience, founded by Anthony Cincotta, a bio-chemist, has 20 employees with headquarters and main laboratories in Tiverton. The company has partnered with S2 Therapeutics Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical organization based in Bristol, Tenn., on the development of the drug. |
