Two Rhode Islanders are among the dozen finalists in a doughnut-making contest run by Canton, Mass.-based Dunkin' Donuts.

Michelle Ventura, of Cranston, and Caitlyn Vandervelde, of Coventry, are among the 12 finalists who will compete for the chance to win a $12,000 prize and have their winning doughnut sold at Dunkin' Donuts locations around the United States. Each finalist wins $1,200 and will travel to Dunkin' Donuts' University in Braintree, Mass.

Ventura made the cut for her "Chocolate Monkey" recipe, a concoction that includes a Bananas Foster-filled doughnut topped with chocolate icing and shredded coconut. Vandervelde's recipe, called "Grandma's Blueberry Maple Donut," is a blueberry cake doughnut with maple icing topped with graham cracker crunch.

It will be up to Ventura and Vandervelde to defend New England's honor as no one else from the six-state region -- not even from Dunkin's home state of Massachusetts -- is still in the running.

"The winning donut will be selected based on the outcome of the bake-off and America's online public voting," Dunkin' Donuts said. "The grand prize winner of the 'Create Dunkin's Next Donut' contest will be unveiled on National Donut Day," which is June 5.
