Bonnie, one of the goats at Simmons Farm in Middletown, sticks her head out to greet visitors.
Providence Journal environmental writer Peter B. Lord reports Thursday that doctors and dollar store owners are not the only ones surviving this recession. It turns out, the true "green shoots" in the state's arid economy are at the farms. "After a century of constant and dramatic decline, the number of farms in Rhode Island has grown in the last several years with nearly 300 new, small farms," Lord reported. "During the same period, the land being farmed has grown by more than 6,000 acres and the value of livestock and crops produced increased more than $10 million, to a total of $65.9 million." |
