Governor Carcieri on Thursday took his proposals for state tax reform directly to the people by posting a video online. In the video, Carcieri outlines his proposals, which include a phase-out of the state's corporate income tax and a reduction in individual income tax rates. He also tells viewers why the tax cuts are needed, and urges voters to contact the General Assembly to pass the plans. In a statement explaining why he chose to make the video, Carcieri said, "More and more individuals get their news from the Web, where it is unfiltered and unedited." Carcieri added, "Rhode Islanders know the cost of high taxes, and they are smart enough to understand the impact high taxes are having on our state's ability to grow revenue and grow jobs. The Web allows me to speak directly to the citizens on important issues that affect them each and every day, including tax reform, the state's fiscal situation, economic development, and job growth." It was only the second time in his nearly seven years as governor that Carcieri has posted a video. In the previous one, he promoted Rhode Island as a location for convention and meeting business, said his spokeswoman, Amy Kempe. Overall, she said, "We are trying to improve communications and recognize how many people get their news from the Internet." President Obama makes his weekly address available on radio, TV and online. "It's a sign of the times on how people get their news and information," Kempe said. "The state, and the nation, are in an evolving time, and we are trying to Carcieri anticipates doing more Web videos on such topics as the economy, the state budget, energy policies, and the new federal economic stimulus law, she said. "There is a national call for greater level of transparency in government, and we are trying to improve our communication and transparency," she said. |
