General Motors Corp. dealers across the country, including seven in Rhode Island, are awaiting word Friday from the company about which of their contracts to sell GM vehicles will be voided. GM said it will notify the dealers by telephone or Fed Ex letters. The company said it has too many dealerships for too few sales and must make the cuts as part of the government-ordered restructuring plan. The planned closings come a day after Chrysler told 789 dealers nationwide, including four local operations, that the automnaker planned to eliminate their relationship as part of its restructuring plan to return to profitability. |
