By Paul Edward Parker WARWICK, R.I. -- The FAA on Tuesday announced it is backing a plan to extend the main runway at T.F. Green Airport to the southwest. The airport has said it must expand to remain competitive, but the expansion plans have been controversial. Until recently, plans had called for expanding to the north, but Kevin Dillon, president and CEO of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, has advocated that the runway be expanded to the south. He says it will have less impact to the city and residents. Last year, that alternative was added to the expansion options being weighed by the Federal Aviation Administration, which has final say. He has said that stretching the runway south toward Main Avenue will require the taking of only 10 houses and one business. More details to come. Check back with projo.com as we follow this story. |
