Rep. Patrick Kennedy visits Alexion's Smithfield plant earlier in April.

Rising sales of its blood disorder drug Soliris boosted profits at Alexion Pharmaceuticals in the first three months of the year, the company announced Thursday.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals is finishing a $116-million project to produce Soliris in Smithfield.

The company, headquartered in Cheshire, Conn., reported $14.5 million in net income, up from a $4.2-million loss in the first quarter of 2008. Soliris sales brought in $81.3 million, nearly double the $45.5 million the drug generated in the same period in 2008. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in March 2007. The company was founded in 1992.

The health care industry has been one of the most resilient in the downturn, and state policymakers have been eager to see more companies like Alexion set up shop in Rhode Island.
