National Grid, the region's biggest energy supplier, and the United Steelworkers union have settled a three year contract for about 725 gas workers in the Greater Boston area.

The contract includes a 2.5 percent annual raise, an improvement in the pension system and a guarantee that none of the existing employees will be laid off during the life of the contract, said a spokesman for United Steelworkers Local 12003.
