MYSTIC, Conn. (AP) -- Mystic Seaport, one of Connecticut's top tourist attractions, has laid off 18 more employees before the summer travel season. That is about 11 percent of the work force at the maritime museum, which includes several historic tall ships and a re-created 19th-century coastal village. Tuesday's announcement follows 14 layoffs in November at the seaport, which now employs 147 people. Stephen White, the museum's president and director, says the cuts are part of an effort to trim the 2010 operating budget from $15.2 million to $13.6 million. He says the museum has seen a decrease in its endowment and annual gifts, and faces an uncertain summer season due to the recession. |
