If you collect unemployment benefits through the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training, heads up: You may have to take an extra step to keep the benefits flowing. If you are receiving a certain type of unemployment benefit -- known as "state extended benefits" or "state high extended benefits" -- you'll have to mail to the Department of Labor and Training a copy of the log that you keep in which you record your weekly job-search activity. That way, you'll verify that you're meeting program requirements -- and you'll keep your benefits coming, the agency says. The log requirement is not new; you've had to keep one all along, said agency spokeswoman Laura Hart. But in response to new guidance from the U.S. Department of Labor, the state agency is notifying affected beneficiaries about the requirement to send in a copy of the log. The agency is also in the process of sending out copies of the required form, she said. Job-search activities include applying for a job opening, visiting a netWORKri One-Stop Career Center for assistance, and, for trade union members only, contacting the union hall for work opportunities, the agency said. The state agency has set up a new information line for those affected, at (401) 243-9107. If you have questions about the new procedures, call that line or send an email to uihelp@dlt.ri.gov. About 775 beneficiaries are affected and will have to start sending in a weekly copy of their job-search log. Overall, there are about 34,000 people who are collecting some type of unemployment benefit through the state Department of Labor and Training, agency statistics show. (All beneficiaries must still continue to certify for benefit payments each week through the automated TeleServe line, the agency said in a statement.)
