CUMBERLAND, R.I. -- A Cumberland-based child care company has launched a new program that would offer parents a free month of child care should they lose their job.

The Children's Workshop, founded in 1990, has centers in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Parents can enroll children in its new Peace of Mind program by May 31 and would offer four weeks of free child care should they be laid off between June 1 and Dec. 31, 2009.

Major companies such as Ford, Jos. A. Bank and Walgreen have taken similar steps to attract customers concerned about spending in a down economy.

"In this challenging economic climate, we want out parents to have one less thing to agonize about while they conduct their job search," said Kevin Fusco, the company's president and CEO.
