PROVIDENCE - Unleaded gasoline prices jumped another two cents per gallon in the past week, diesel prices declined by a penny, and home heating oil prices dropped a hefty six cents a gallon, according to the weekly report released Monday by the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources.

The average price of unleaded at the self-serve pump is now $2.08 per gallon, a two-cent increase that was significant, but not as jarring as the previous week, when the price rose seven cents.

Pump prices ranged from $2.02 to $2.10. The full-service average was $2.23.

Home heating oil prices, after rising a penny the previous week, dropped by six cents last week. The average is now $2.24 per gallon, with a range going from a low of $1.80 to a high of $2.50.

The per-gallon price of diesel was $2.45, according to the survey of area retailers.

Nobody has ever sufficiently explained to me why, when for decades diesel was cheaper than gasoline, it suddenly became more expensive and has stayed that way.
Aren't the costs of refining crude oil into diesel less than for gasoline? I can't help but believe that if diesel were ever to drop down to a reasonable level, (somewhere slightly below the average price for a gallon of gas) the long term benefit to the entire economy would be palpable.
Until such time that we transform our society to a more "green and energy efficient one, would it not help to ease the costs of operations for a broad base of industry and transportation companies.
Simply put, why aren't the oil companies doing their share to help this strained economy of ours by producing more #2 diesel and dropping the damn price of diesel. The benefits would obviously be wide spread.
