U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse today sharply criticized American International Group (AIG), the ailing insurance company that has received billions of dollars in federal bailout funds. AIG recently disclosed that it plans to pay $450 million in bonuses to some employees of its financial products unit. The company also said that of the $170 billion or so it has received in federal aid, the company has distributed more than half to its trading partners. "This is completely infuriating," Whitehouse said. "It's at least conceivable that some of them should be in jail." Whitehouse also urged greater government oversight. His comments came following a meeting he attended in Providence's Olneyville section to talk about foreclosures, housing and other topics. |
