Six community groups and other organizations in Rhode Island, including the International Institute of Rhode Island and the Westerly Public Library, will team up with the Internal Revenue Service this Saturday to offer free tax help as tax-filing deadline nears.
People who earned $42,000 or less last year are eligible for free tax return preparation at these sites and at the IRS's Providence office, at 380 Westminster St., which will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
At the IRS office, staff will also distribute tax forms and booklets, answer tax-related questions, and arrange payment plans for people who -- regardless of income -- may be unable to pay their tax bills. The event is planned, in part, to reach those who have been affected by the recession.
