AAER Inc., the Canadian-based wind turbine manufacturer, said this morning that it has completed the installation of a turbine in Portsmouth that is now generating electricity. "We are very pleased to have completed the installation of our second turbine in the U.S.," said Dave Gagnon, president and chief executive officer of AAER. The company's other turbine is at the U.S. Marine Corp. Logistics Base in Barstow, California. The 1.5 megawatt windmill, erected behind the tennis courts at Portsmouth High School, off Route 24, is expected to produce 3 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, enough to meet three-quarters of the needs of municipal buildings in town. Wind-Smart LLC, a subsidiary of AAER,said the project is worth approximately $3 million, including construction and start-up costs. In addition, a 10-year contract was signed, with an option to renew, for maintenance of the turbine. |
