MIDDLETOWN, RI - A sophomore at Middletown High School was awarded a full, four-year scholarship to Roger Williams University as part of the 2009 GRRL Tech expo held at the university today. The scholarship, which includes $1,000 annually to buy textbooks, went to Mersina Simanski.

In its fourth year at Roger Williams University, the GRRL (Girls Reaching Remarkable Levels) Tech expo matched more than 430 local high school girls with Roger Williams University faculty members and female professionals from local companies for workshops and presentations that encouraged careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

The GRRL Tech expo was organized by Tech Collective, an industry association for information technology and biotechnology in Rhode Island. Roger Williams University co-sponsored the event along with Amgen, Atrion Networking Corp., Epivax, Inc., Junior Achievement of Rhode Island and the Governor's Workforce Board.

"Encouraging girls to consider science and technology as a future career option will help strengthen Rhode Island's technology industry," said JoAnn Johnson, manager of youth and education programs for the Tech Collective.
