The Internal Revenue Service plans to hold special Saturday hours on March 21 at 253 of its offices nationwide - including one in Providence - as a way of making the agency more accessible to taxpayers as the filing deadline nears.

The IRS office at 380 Westminster St., Providence, will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day to answer tax questions, distribute tax forms and booklets, resolve outstanding tax issues, and accept payments.

Office staff will also be available to help make arrangements for those who are having trouble paying their federal tax obligations, said IRS spokeswoman Peggy Riley. "The IRS recognizes that many area taxpayers may be facing financial hardships and need extra help this filing season," she said.

Office staff will also be available that day to prepare basic tax returns for those who qualify for the federal earned income credit (essentially a tax break for the working poor) or those whose income was less than $42,000 last year, she said.
