There were only 670,000 job openings in the Northeast in January, down from 984,000 a year ago, according to a new report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Nationally, there were 3 million job openings in January, down from 4.3 million.

The regional statistics, though dreary, are not surprising. Rhode Island, for example, saw its unemployment rate hit 10.3 percent in January, its highest level in 30 years. In a survey released last month, Sovereign Bank found that more than half of businesses in Rhode Island forecast no change in staffing levels this year, 20 percent predict a "slight decrease" and 5 percent expect a "significant decrease."
