The Yamaha Corporation of America, citing tough economic times, has notified the Newport Music Festival that it is pulling its sponsorship of the classical-music event after 22 seasons.

"It's a major blow," said Mark Malkovich, the festival's artistic director, "but not unexpected."

Yamaha not only supplied pianos to the festival, held each July in Newport's storied mansions, but provided an annual infusion of cash.

Malkovich estimated that Yamaha contributed $3 to $4 million to the festival during their sponsorship run. He said Yamaha will still provide pianos for the event, which this year runs from July 10-26, but the festival will have to pay for tuning and trucking. Yamaha will no longer provide a cash gift.

"I think we'll be okay," said Malkovich, adding that the festival is cutting costs wherever it can. "At least for this year."
