Looking for a job? The State of Rhode Island is hiring.

The Department of Labor and Training is in the process of hiring 40 people to help answer the phones and perform other tasks at the agency's unemployment insurance call center.

The agency is adding the staff to help reduce the backlog of claims for unemployment benefits and to help reduce wait times for people who phone in, said Raymond A. Filippone, who oversees the agency's unemployment insurance program. The agency has been swamped with calls because of Rhode Island's high unemployment rate, currently 10 percent.

The jobs are paid for with federal funds. They generally pay $19 an hour, plus benefits. The jobs are listed as part-time, but those hired may wind up working up to 35 hours a week. The agency posted the jobs online last week and already has more than 200 applicants, spokeswoman Laura Hart said.
