WARWICK, RI -- If William D. McCaffrey, director of the Warwick Area Career and Technical Center, gets his wish, there will be a little white pick-up truck that is anything but ordinary cruising along in this year's Gaspee Day parade in early summer.

The school recently won a $7,500 grant from the Rhode Island Foundation that will allow technical students to complete their "Green Machine Project," which challenges them to build a zero-emission vehicle that can be recharged by solar power. That means no fossil fuel, and if the students are successful, McCaffery said the vehicle will be showcased to the public as well as the industry experts on one of the high school's advisory board.

McCaffery said that the students have already started their research and labor, working with the donated body of a Chevrolet pick-up truck.

He said he is confident that the students will rise to the challenge -- from building the electric motor to the solar panels that will collect energy to recharge the truck. The Green Machine Project is also exciting because it will tap the skills of students in different programs at the career and technical school, McCaffery said.

"We will have students in the electricity and the automotive programs working together," he said, adding that a better selection of "green" vehicles will increase the market for alternative transportation.

"As the electric/hybrid technology grows, the market for green energy will grow with it, encouraging future investment in wind farms, solar power fields and geothermal plants," McCaffery said. "My wish for this project? To see this Green Machine driving in the city's Gaspee Day parade."
