Most companies that offer tax preparation software programs have eliminated the separate fees they charge for electronic filing, a top Internal Revenue Service official said. In past years, off-the-shelf software programs typically allowed consumers to prepare their returns, but charged them extra for filing their returns electronically, IRS official David Williams said. This season, however, most firms won't charge separate fees, Williams said in a conference call today. Thus, in most instances, most people who buy a tax preparation software program this tax season will not have to pay extra to file their returns electronically. (Some or all of the cost of e-filing will be included in the price of the software package.) |
