Barbara Cervone, who runs a non-profit organization called What Kids Can Do, is one of 15 national winners of The Purpose Prize, an award designed to recognize social innovators over the age of 60. What Kids Can Do recognizes the accomplishments of young people through its Web site and as a non-profit book publisher. Six of the Purpose Prize winners received $100,000. The others, including Cervone, received $10,000. The prize is awarded by Civic Ventures, whose goal is to to engage older workers as a force for social change. Cervone, 61, worked with the Rhode Island Foundation and then was chosen to coordinate a $500 million grant from Walter H. Annenberg to improve America's schools. She left that post to start What Kids Can Do in 2001. |
